You may remember back in November, we issued a survey to our hike participants to gather information on how to best serve our community through our group led hikes. 107 members of our community took the survey. Board members met to discuss the survey responses and identified six primary takeaways:
- Seek to gain more diversity (age and ethnicity) among SWT hike participants.
- Starting place may vary, expanding the options to explore more of the parks and areas in southwest Portland
- Explore adding a third hike (4 to 5 mi)
- Develop more self-led hikes (popular and in demand)
- Data supports our current distance configuration of 5 to 7 miles at a pace of 2.5 mph for the hikes and 2 to 4 miles at a pace of 2 mph for the walks.
- Accentuate “Explore” and “Exercise” as key components of our hikes.

After two years of hospital-only use, the Portland Tram is open to the public! This means that all of the “T’s” of the 4T trail are there to experience: Trail, Tram, Trolley, Train. During the closure, the tram portion was covered either by walking down Marquam hill, or skipping that portion all together. We are happy to welcome the Portland Aerial Tram back to public use. Inventory of SWTrails Signs

Brand New sign installed at West entrance to George Himes Park
SWTrails PDX is rolling out a new GIS-based tracking system to help monitor the signs guiding you through the 40-plus miles of urban trails in southwest Portland. Using GIS technology, our volunteers will visit each of the 650+ signs in every corner of SW Portland to determine location, condition and other useful attributes – including pictures!
Our goal is to have a count of all signs on each jurisdiction so we can more effectively work with city, county, and regional partners to repair or replace signs as needed.
Our band of citizen-scientists began inspecting on April 18th to get an accurate count and picture of those ubiquitous brown signs. Work will continue until complete. Follow along as we catalog the signs by visiting our interactive dashboard here: https://arcg.is/0e9Gz0 Continue reading →
