Protect the killdeer at Wilson/Rieke

Killdeer parent and chick on the grounds of Rieke School

Two killdeers have again returned to the Wilson softball field to lay their eggs. Over the next month they will hatch and the chicks will be without flight for about a month. Last year they hatched four chicks but two were caught by dogs who were off leash in the area.

Since the killdeer is a protected species by the US Migratory Bird Act, Jamie Repasky, the science coordinator at Rieke Elementary, wants to put out a message to the community to keep their dogs on leash in the area for the next month or two.
