Meet at the Back Side of Ida B. Wells High School
Title: A Park, Hillsdale Park Loop
Length: 2.95 miles
Elevation change: 293 ft.
Join us as we explore the neighborhood surrounding Stephens Creek Natural Area, walk along SWTrail #3 past the Frisbee Golf Course, down to A Park, up to Hillsdale City Park, and then circle back to where we started. There are a few steep stairs, so bring walking sticks if you need them.
As always, well behaved dogs on leash and children are welcome. Note that smoking on our walks is not permitted for health reasons. Please be prepared: dress for the weather, bring water and a snack if you like. As per current COVID guidelines, bring a mask and maintain a 6-foot distance between walkers other than your personal family or pod and for other walkers we may encounter along the way. We hope to see you there.
The section of Trail 5 going through the campus of Lewis and Clark College that was closed due to the pandemic is once again open. Walkers no longer need to use our detour posted in August, 2020.
Get out and enjoy!
Join us for our regularly scheduled clean-up on Trail 3 alongside Wells High School’s northern edge near the food trucks and bleachers. Bring gloves, hedge trimmers, pruners, and clippers. A chainsaw may be useful to attack some of the larger growth.
Pizza will be provided for lunch.

SW Trails Neighborhood Hikes are back in full swing. Our June and July hikes were a huge success. We were all so happy to see one another again and welcome new walkers!
2nd Saturday Hikes are usually 5-7 miles in length with elevation ups and downs at a 2.5-3 mph pace. Challenging! If you have doubts if a hike of this length and pace is right for you then try out our 3rd Saturday Stroll and Coffee which is a shorter 2-3.5 mile walk with gentler hills, a bit slower pace at about 2.0 mph with an optional coffee stop at the end. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early so we can be ready to start promptly at 9am.
On both hikes, an experienced guide will help you discover the hidden parks and secret cut-throughs that wind through Portland’s southwest neighborhoods. If there is a trail in SW Portland that you love, SW Trails probably helped establish it and helps to maintain it. We are completely volunteer-based. Let us know if you’d like to participate in: trail work (firstname.lastname@example.org); lead a hike (email@example.com); donate or become a member.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The August 2021 Stroll will be on the 4th Saturday in August due to Multnomah Days scheduled on the 3rd Saturday. We really hope to see you at our booth during Multnomah Days on Saturday, August 21, and on the Stroll and Coffee walk on Saturday, August 28!
The August 2nd Saturday Walk will be held on Aug 14. We hope you can make it!
Meet at the back side of Ida Wells High School (formerly Wilson HS) a few minutes before 9am. From the high school we will walk over to George Himes Park along SWTrail #3 down to the riverpath, then back up using the Seymour Ct steps. We will then walk along Slavin Rd, the future route of the Red Electric Trail. We’ll then use the Buhler Cut-off to get to Terwilliger, then Cheltenham St, up to the Hillsdale Library and back to the high school. The walk is 5mi with a 600-ft elevation change.
