3rd Saturday Walk, July 16 2022

Name: Himes Park Loop with Bagels
Leader: Lee Buhler, Don Baack
Start Location: Ida B Wells Parking Lot Near the Food Carts
Start Time: 9 am (arrive 10-15 min. early so we can start promptly at 9am)
Distance: Approx. 2.5 miles
Pace and Terrain: Our 3rd Saturday Walks are a more casual length and pace (about 2 mile per hour for 2-4 miles) than the fast-paced 2nd Saturday Hikes.  This walk will be on both quiet city streets and on trails and paths with uneven surfaces, a few steps, and the possibility of some slippery spots, roots, and short steep sections.
Participation Requirements: Fully COVID vaccinated (including Booster), have masks available as an option for when we gather in close proximity.
Bus Information: Many different buses stop at the intersection of SW Sunset and SW Capitol Hwy.

Route Description:  We will leave Ida B. Wells HS and walk down to the Raz-Baack Crossing. From there we will wind back to Himes Park for a coffee and bagel break before crossing SW Terwilliger to head back to the High School. We have asked for good weather. It will be nice to see you!

Because COVID infection numbers are still high, we would like our walkers to be vaccinated.    We also ask that you comply with current State recommendations to maintain the recommended social distance between other walkers who are not part of your family or personal pod. Be prepared to mask up for our beginning group talk and if social distancing is impossible while walking.  Unvaccinated walkers must mask up for the entire walk.

Bring water and snacks, wear good walking shoes, and dress appropriately for our  summer weather. Kids and well-behaved pets on leash are welcome, but no smoking for the health and consideration of others. We try and find a restroom on our walking route but many times nothing is available so prepare accordingly. You are welcome to join us for just a portion of the hike but let a hike leader or sweep person know when you are leaving the hike.

Looking forward to walking with you at this event.
Lee and Don

SWTrails 2nd Saturday Hike July 9

Name: Walk the NEW Red Electric bridge!
Leader:  Dave Manville
Start Location: Ida Wells HS parking near the food carts
Start Time:  9 am (8:45am meet time so we can start promptly at 9am)
End Time:  12pm
Distance:  6 miles
Elevation Change: 900 ft
Average Pace:  2.5 mph
Participation Requirements:  Fully vaccinated (including Booster), have masks as you prefer
Bus Information:  Tri Met stop ID 929 and 955 several buses serve these stops

On this month’s 6-mile 900ft elevation hike we will highlight hiking on the newly completed Red Electric bridge on SW Capital Hwy across from Verde Cocina Hillsdale. From there we will walk on west on the alignment of the Red Electric trail and neighborhood streets making our way to SW Trail #7 on SW 45th then down the path to SW Trail #1 and head back east through Albert Kelly Park. Last month SWTrails completed a significant rebuild of the steps on SW Twombly Ave (4400 block) and we will zig and zag our way up there to walk these amazing newly completed steps.  Our return to Ida Wells will then be along SW 19th Dr and SW Sunset to our start just behind the food carts at Ida Wells HS across from the bleacher. This hike is 6 miles long and has 900 feet of elevation change and we will walk at about 2.5 mph. This is our 2nd Saturday series of Hikes which are a little longer and faster paced than the 3rd Saturday series of walks. Dave Manville will lead this hike.

Bring a snack, water, good footwear, sunglasses, and rain gear as appropriate. Dress and prepare for the weather on hike day. Children and well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome. For health reasons, there is no smoking on SWTrails walks and hikes. If you need to leave the hike early let a hike leader know. We try to find a restroom along the way, but it’s not always possible to do so.

Looking forward to seeing you there with us.

Dave Manville

Hike Protocol Survey Results Released

You may remember back in November, we issued a survey to our hike participants to gather information on how to best serve our community through our group led hikes.  107 members of our community took the survey.  Board members met to discuss the survey responses and identified six primary takeaways:

  1. Seek to gain more diversity (age and ethnicity) among SWT hike participants.
  2. Starting place may vary, expanding the options to explore more of the parks and areas in southwest Portland
  3. Explore adding a third hike (4 to 5 mi)
  4. Develop more self-led hikes (popular and in demand)
  5. Data supports our current distance configuration of 5 to 7 miles at a pace of 2.5 mph for the hikes and 2 to 4 miles at a pace of 2 mph for the walks.
  6. Accentuate “Explore” and “Exercise” as key components of our hikes.

The Tram is Open Again!

After two years of hospital-only use, the Portland Tram is open to the public!  This means that all of the “T’s” of the 4T trail are there to experience: Trail, Tram, Trolley, Train.  During the closure, the tram portion was covered either by walking down Marquam hill, or skipping that portion all together.  We are happy to welcome the Portland Aerial Tram back to public use. Inventory of SWTrails Signs

Brand New sign installed at West entrance to George Himes Park

SWTrails PDX is rolling out a new GIS-based tracking system to help monitor the signs guiding you through the 40-plus miles of urban trails in southwest Portland.   Using GIS technology, our volunteers will visit each of the 650+ signs in every corner of SW Portland to determine location, condition and other useful attributes – including pictures!

Our goal is to have a count of all signs on each jurisdiction so we can more effectively work with city, county, and regional partners to repair or replace signs as needed.

Our band of citizen-scientists began inspecting on April 18th to get an accurate count and picture of those ubiquitous brown signs.  Work will continue until complete.  Follow along as we catalog the signs by visiting our interactive dashboard here:  https://arcg.is/0e9Gz0 Continue reading
