From there we will walk on west on the alignment of the Red Electric trail and neighborhood streets making our way to SW Trail #7 on SW 45th then down the path to SW Trail #1 and head back east through Albert Kelly Park. Last month SWTrails completed a significant rebuild of the steps on SW Twombly Ave (4400 block) and we will zig and zag our way up there to walk these amazing newly completed steps.  Our return to Ida Wells will then be along SW 19th Dr and SW Sunset to our start just behind the food carts at Ida Wells HS across from the bleacher. This hike is 6 miles long and has 900 feet of elevation change and we will walk at about 2.5 mph. This is our 2nd Saturday series of Hikes which are a little longer and faster paced than the 3rd Saturday series of walks. Dave Manville will lead this hike. \nBring a snack\, water\, good footwear\, sunglasses\, and rain gear as appropriate. Dress and prepare for the weather on hike day. Children and well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome. For health reasons\, there is no smoking on SWTrails walks and hikes. If you need to leave the hike early let a hike leader know. We try to find a restroom along the way\, but it’s not always possible to do so. \nLooking forward to seeing you there with us. \nDave Manville

SUMMARY:3rd Saturday Walk\, July 16 2022
DESCRIPTION:Name: Himes Park Loop with Bagels\nLeader: Lee Buhler\, Don Baack\nStart Location: Ida B Wells Parking Lot Near the Food Carts\nStart Time: 9 am (arrive 10-15 min. early so we can start promptly at 9am)\nDistance: Approx. 2.5 miles\nPace and Terrain: Our 3rd Saturday Walks are a more casual length and pace (about 2 mile per hour for 2-4 miles) than the fast-paced 2nd Saturday Hikes.  This walk will be on both quiet city streets and on trails and paths with uneven surfaces\, a few steps\, and the possibility of some slippery spots\, roots\, and short steep sections.\nParticipation Requirements: Fully COVID vaccinated (including Booster)\, have masks available as an option for when we gather in close proximity.\nBus Information: Many different buses stop at the intersection of SW Sunset and SW Capitol Hwy. \nRoute Description:  We will leave Ida B. Wells HS and walk down to the Raz-Baack Crossing. From there we will wind back to Himes Park for a coffee and bagel break before crossing SW Terwilliger to head back to the High School. We have asked for good weather. It will be nice to see you! \nBecause COVID infection numbers are still high\, we would like our walkers to be vaccinated.    We also ask that you comply with current State recommendations to maintain the recommended social distance between other walkers who are not part of your family or personal pod. Be prepared to mask up for our beginning group talk and if social distancing is impossible while walking.  Unvaccinated walkers must mask up for the entire walk. \nBring water and snacks\, wear good walking shoes\, and dress appropriately for our  summer weather. Kids and well-behaved pets on leash are welcome\, but no smoking for the health and consideration of others. We try and find a restroom on our walking route but many times nothing is available so prepare accordingly. You are welcome to join us for just a portion of the hike but let a hike leader or sweep person know when you are leaving the hike. \nLooking forward to walking with you at this event.\nLee and Don \nFor more information or to volunteer to lead a future walk in your neighborhood\, contact us at walks.swtrails.org or use our web form on the Walks page HERE to get in touch.
