SUMMARY:SWTrails Monthly Work Party Thursday\, December 5: Marshall Park Annual Sweeping of the Trails
DESCRIPTION:SW Trails monthly Thursday Work Party for December 5th will be at Marshall Park from 9am until Noon.  We are going to do our annual sweeping of the leaves off the soft surface trails\, maybe cut back a little brush also\, all in preparation for the trails wintering over and still remaining in use. \nParks has a request of our SW Trails volunteer group: let them know ahead of time if you can attend so they can better prepare for the group size. They have set up a project page on SOLV. If you plan to attend please use the page below\, or just reply to me via email\,  daville50@outlook.com and I will add you to our SW Trails group. \nSOLV Sign-up:\nhttps://www.solveoregon.org/opportunity/a0C1I00000OxFTOUA3 \nWe will meet at the playground on SW 12th at the main entrance to Marshall Park. \nHere is a map link –> https://goo.gl/maps/GuvT9HvVcrJZnFyV8 \nPlease consider joining us out on the trail in 2019 (and beyond) as these work parties are designed to support a wide range of capabilities. We welcome all and all abilities. So give some thought to joining us or just stop by and say hi. \nAs always our work is guided by the Portland Parks Lands Stewardship folks\, and Parks will bring all the tools\, gloves\, and materials we need\, also coffee\, snacks\, water\, and usually some fruit. On these work parties it is not necessary to stay for the whole event and you can work at whatever level your skill and energy allows. It is just great to meet the neighbors and get a little trail work in. \nWhen you join us please wear work clothing\, closed toe shoes and weather appropriate layers.  It is the NW–who knows what weather we will get\, but layers are always good. \nPlease note also that there is no work party in Jan 2020 it is just usually a bit icy\, so we will pick it up again in Feb 2020. \nHere are some additional thoughts as we close out 2019 with this work party. \nFrom my records SW Trails worked on 10 3hr work parties in several parks: Maricara\, Dickinson\, Gabriel\, Albert Kelly\, Marshall\, Foley Balmer and Council Crest. We built or repaired several hundred feet of trail and brushed out several hundred feet of trail always with the goal of making the walking easier and creating a year round tread surface. So as you head into that time of year where you may be considering a donation to one of your favorite organizations SW Trails would appreciate your consideration. You can donate to SW Trails via our web page by mail and online via PayPal.  Thank You.\n  or visit our SW Trails.org join page  \nDave Manville

SUMMARY:SWTrails Monthly Hike Saturday\, December 14
DESCRIPTION:SWTrails’ December walk will be led by Ben and Sue Donora. This month’s hike will be approximately 5.5 miles with 400 ft. in elevation gain. Our walk will take us over three large recently completed trail bridges; we’ll explore the neighborhoods of West Portland Park\, Quail Park and Marshall Park\, and hike the wooded trails of Marshall and Maricara Parks. \nWe will meet behind the bleachers at Wilson High School (SW Sunset Blvd. and Capitol Highway) and be ready to go by 9:00 am.  We’ll carpool to the Barbur Blvd Transit Center (or you can meet us at the BBTC at 9:15am). From there\, we’ll walk over I-5 into West Portland Park via SW Trail #5\, through the unique Quail Park development\, and into the Foley Balmer Natural Area and over the first new bridge. We’ll continue on to Marshall Park\, where we’ll connect to SW Trail #6 and walk over the two new Owl Creek bridges. After that\, we’ll connect with Trail #5 to 14th Drive and hike through the gorgeous woods of the Maricara Natural Area. We’ll pass by Jackson Middle School to return to the Transit Center and carpool back to Wilson High School. It’s December so be prepared for all kinds of weather. \nBring a snack\, water\, good footwear\, sunglasses and dress for the weather.  Well-behaved dogs are allowed\, but must be on leash. For health reasons\, there is no smoking on SWTrails walks. For more information or to volunteer to lead a future walk in your neighborhood\, contact Britta Gordon (swtrailsbritta@gmail.com). Co-sponsored by SWTrails PDX and Hillsdale Neighborhood Association.
