SUMMARY:Holiday Hike - December 2021
DESCRIPTION:Meet at: Ida B Well HS by the food carts\nat 8:45 for 9am hike departure \nThe SWTrails Neighborhood hike for Saturday December 11th will be led by Don Baack. \n \n Don is one of the original founders of SWTrails PDX and on this hike we will explore SW Trail #6 and see some recent maintenance activity carried out by our SWTrails volunteers\, then walk up a key SWTrails-built and recently repaired connecting trail past the Stonehedge (KGON) Tower\, up Council Crest Drive past Healy Heights Park\, then up to connect with Trail #1 coming from the east. We will then follow Trail #1 southwest across Fairmount down a city-maintained stairway and another recent trail-repair to Chesapeake (AKA the Goat Trail). We will keep on Trail #1 down to a future project awaiting a permit to replace a large number of rotten steps\, some of which were installed around 50 years ago. We will leave Trail #1 on 27th and proceed east on Hamilton Ct to 25th. We will then drop down to connect to 19th and proceed south on a Safe Route to School to 18th\, Sunset and back to the food carts. This hike is 4.3 miles in distance and has 550 feet elevation change. You can see a map of this hike at the bottom of this post. \nJoining us? Great! Arrive at least 10 minutes early to sign in. 2nd Saturday hikes are geared to last 2.5 hours and be at a faster pace than our 3rd Saturday Walk and Stroll. TriMet Bus 39\, 44\, 45\, 54\, 56 has a stop right at the food carts on Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway. \nWe are following Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Although masks are not required in most public outdoor settings recently\, we do require you to wear your mask while we gather and keep the mask at the ready to use while we hike if you cannot maintain 6ft distance. We prefer that all walkers be vaccinated. No vaccination? Wear a mask and keep a 6ft distance from other hikers. \nBring a snack\, water\, good footwear\, sunglasses\, and rain gear as appropriate. Dress and prepare for the weather on hike day. Well-behaved dogs are allowed but must be on leash. For health reasons\, there is no smoking on SW Trails walks and hikes. If you need to leave the hike early let a hike leader know. We try to find a restroom along the way\, but it’s not always possible to do so. \nFor more information or to volunteer to lead a future hike in your neighborhood get in touch on our web form HERE.   We are looking for a volunteer to be our hike coordinator if interested\, please reach out to us.\n

SUMMARY:3rd Saturday Walk December 18 2021
DESCRIPTION:Gabriel Park Walk\nJoin SW Trails on Saturday Dec 18th for our 3rd Saturday Walk. These walks are designed to offer a shorter distance 2-4 miles and slower paced walking opportunity. This month Dave Manville will lead an exploration of Gabriel Park via Multnomah Village on a 2.9 mile walk with 315 ft of elevation change. We will start from the Little Gabriel parking lot and head over to Multnomah Village for a look at the holiday trimmings and then back over to Gabriel Park to examine the new names for trails through the park that are being implemented. We’ll head on up and look at the new playground and unfinished path and then head over to the Nature Area trails and walk up the trail to the Nature Shelter by the Community Gardens that was built by SWTrails a couple years ago. We will be mostly on paved streets but will spend time on dirt trails with occasional roots\, mud.\nBecause COVID infection numbers are still high\, we would like our walkers to be vaccinated.    We also ask that you comply with current State recommendations to maintain the recommended social distance between other walkers who are not part of your family or personal pod. Be prepared to mask up for our beginning group talk and if social distancing is impossible while walking.  Unvaccinated walkers must mask up for the entire walk.  \nBring a snack\, water\, good footwear\, and dress for the weather\, raingear?\, sunglasses?. Note that smoking on our walks is not permitted for health reasons. Kids and well-behaved pets are welcome. \nHope to see you there. \nFor more information or to volunteer to lead a future walk in your neighborhood\, contact us at walks@swtrails.org or use our web form on the Walks page HERE to get in touch. \nPlease also note: We are looking for a hike coordinator to help organize our two monthly hikes. The work involves some creative writing\, wrangling hike leaders\, distributing communication to various publishing and event sources.  It is fun and takes about 3-5 hours a month. \nCo-sponsored by SWTrails PDX and Hillsdale Neighborhood Association.
