SUMMARY:1st Thursday April Work Party
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, April 6\, SWTrails and Portland Parks will continue the work we began last month on the “Frey Property” trail in Marshall Park on approximately 150 yds of NEW trail in Marshall Park from Owl Creek Bridge up to Taylors Ferry Rd. The trail is part of a system of trails on the Metro Regional Trail list as the Hillsdale to Lake Oswego Trail. \nMeet at the Mashall Park entrance on SW 18th at around 9489 SW 18th Place (https://goo.gl/maps/9nMb4Esx7ygR6vgA7) to then walk over to the work area across the Owl Creek Bridge and up the new trail route to the big white parks truck. \nWe need a lot of workers for this one as we do more grading of the trail\, more moving ballast and cap onto the surface\, doing step work\, rock wall work\, and overall creating a wonderful new trail. \nAs always\, our work is guided by the Portland Parks Lands Stewardship folks. Parks will bring all the tools\, gloves\, and materials we need\, and also\, coffee\, snacks and water. It is not necessary to stay for the whole event and you can work at whatever level your skill and energy allows. It is just great to meet the neighbors and get in a little trail work exercise. \nWhen you join us\, please wear work clothing\, closed toe shoes and weather-appropriate layers. It is the NW who knows what weather we will get but several layers are always a good idea. \nPlease let me know if you can join us this Thursday. Email Dave (dmanville@outlook.com) with a quick reply of “IN” if you can help. This allows Parks to know the tools and quantity of material to bring. \nI hope to see you out on the trail this Thursday April 6th 9AM\, Thanks for joining us to help the trails. \nDave Manville\nSW Trails Project Lead

SUMMARY:SWTrails 3rd Saturday Walk April 15\,2023
DESCRIPTION:Name: Red Electric Bridge/Texas Wetland Loop\nLeader: Deb Small/Lee Buhler\nStart Location: Ida B. Wells HS Parking Lot Behind the Food Carts\nStart Time: 9 am (arrive 10-15 min. early so we can start promptly at 9am)\nDistance: 3.5 Miles\nElevation Change: 347 ft.\nAverage Pace:  2 mph\nParticipation Requirements: Prefer fully vaccinated (including Booster)\, have masks\nBus Information:  Many bus routes go to the SW Sunset/SW Capitol Hwy stop \nJoin us as we explore some of the newer walking options in some of the southwest neighborhoods\, AND have an opportunity to chat and chew!  We will begin at Ida B. Wells HS and head towards the new Red Electric Bridge and continue down SW Bertha to walk on a portion of the Red Electric Trail as we head to the edge of Gabriel Park.   We’ll then head to the Texas Wetland area and stop at Trudi Raz’s house – that’s Raz as in the Raz-Baack Crossing in the Stephen’s Creek Natural Area – for refreshments (nibbles and coffee? We’ll see!). We’ll then finish the last mile by walking through Stephens Creek Nature area on our way back to the high school. \nMost of our walk will be on surface streets\, with steps leading down to and up from the Raz-Baack Crossing.  There is an alternative path that will avoid the steps going down to the Crossing if you prefer.  This would be the only area that one might enjoy having walking sticks. \nBring water and snacks\, wear good walking shoes\, and dress appropriately for our spring weather…sunglasses\, sunscreen\, rain gear? Kids and well-behaved pets on leash are welcome\, but no smoking for the health and consideration of others. We try and find a restroom on our walking route but many times nothing is available so prepare accordingly. You are welcome to join us for just a portion of the hike but let a hike leader or sweep person know when you are leaving the hike. \nHope to see you there.\nDeb and Lee
