DESCRIPTION:Monthly Work Party Thursday Nov 7th 2024\n9am-Noon at Marshall Nature Park\nJoin SWTrails and Portland Parks and Recreation as we continue our regular 1st Thursday of each month work parties in one of the SW Portland Parks. This month on Thursday Nov 7th\, 2024\, between 9AM and Noon we will be working in Marshall Nature Park.  We will park and meet at: 9451 SW 18th Pl\, Portland\, OR 97219 Google Link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/RVxoxbebgHkFzrto7. This is the small parking lot at the north and west end of Marshall Park.  There is additional parking on SW Collins Ct a bit south and turn right to park on the side street. \nThere are lots of tasks to do out in Marshall Park this month as we try and stay ahead of winter weather and make the trail the best it can be for winter walkers and hikers. That includes working on clearing and adding trail drains so the water gets off and stays off the trail\, possibly some split rail fence repair\, raking leaves off the trail\, leveling\, “benching” the trail (making the trail a bit wider by removing excess soil that has sluffed onto the trail at the “hinge”).  It is really fun work and all the trail users appreciate this continuous improvement and maintenance. Keep in mind also that Portland Parks does this work day in and day out and SWTrails only on occasion. We will be walking up to 1 mile on the trails. The tools we use will be a fire break grubber tool we call the Green Grubber\, loppers\, pick mattocks\, Pulaski\, Mcleods\, shovels\, hand saws\, and rakes. It is great fun to see and use some of these time-honored trail and fire tools and put them to work on the trails for all of us to enjoy.  There are restrooms on this work party down at the Marshall Park playground entrance area. \nPlease join us out working on the trails with Portland Parks this season.  We really need new volunteers. These work parties are designed to support a wide range of worker capabilities and build community in our neighborhoods. We welcome all with all abilities. So\, give some thought to joining us or just stop by and say hi. \nIf you do plan to join in the fun\, give me a heads-up on email\, or text (503-753-8186 with your name)\, and I can then pass a head count to our Parks leaders. It is OK to just show up on the workday\, also. Please be about 10-15 minutes early to the work party (8:45 am) to sign in and we always start with a safety and tools talk describing and demonstrating the work ahead. \nAs always\, our work is guided by the Portland Parks Lands Stewardship folks. Parks will bring all the tools\, gloves\, and materials we need\, and also coffee\, snacks and water. On these work parties it is not necessary to stay for the whole event and you can work at whatever level your skill and energy allows. It is just great to meet the neighbors and get in a little trail work exercise. \nWhen you join us\, please wear work clothing\, closed toe shoes and weather-appropriate layers.  It is the Pacific Northwest so who knows what weather we will get\, but several layers are always a good idea. No experience is necessary! Youth participants must be at least age 14.

DESCRIPTION:SWTrails 2nd Saturday Hike\, Nov 9th\, 9am to Noon \nMeet at the Wells HS food Carts 6238 SW Capital Hwy HERE\nName: 6 Parks and 1 newly built trail Wells HS to Marshall Park and back\nLeader: Dave Manville\nStart Location: Ida B Wells HS at the food carts HERE(6238 SW Capitol Hwy\, Portland\, OR 97239)\nStart Time:  9 am (arrive 10-15 minutes early so we can start promptly at 9am)\nDistance: 6.6 miles\nElevation Change:  780 ft.\nPace:  2.5 mph avg \nBus Information: TriMet Stop ID’s 929 and 955 lots of buses but not all on Saturday. \nCome out\, get some exercise and join SWTrails on Saturday\, Nov 9th\, 9AM\, as Dave Manville leads us on a 6-Parks plus 1 big new trail route on SWTrail #4 in the heart of SW Portland. Our Park visit list for this walk will include Burlingame\, Marigold Hydro\, Marshall\, Folley\, Spring Garden\, Multnomah Village\, A-park\, and Stephens Crossing. This should be a great hike with lots to see and a whole bunch of fall colors. Also\, last May SWTrails received a permit from ODOT (Oregon Dept of Transportation) to rebuild the trail from near the SW Terwilliger overpass (SW 4th Ave up to SW Canby St) on the route of SW Trail #4. This rebuild still has some work to be done (hopefully soon) but you will get to see some of what we do when we are not out hiking our trails. And many thanks to the volunteers who have worked on this “SW Canby” trail project. We need you and others back again soon to continue our trailwork. \nJoin us! And remember\, this is our faster paced 2.5 mph average speed hike with usually a 5- t07-mile distance and some moderate elevation change. \nBring a snack\, water\, good footwear\, and dress appropriately for the weather (raingear? gloves? sunglasses? sunscreen? many layers?). Note that smoking on our hikes and walks is not permitted for health reasons. Kids are welcome and well-behaved pets on leash are welcome also. DESCRIPTION:3rd Saturday Walk Nov 16\, 2024 \nName:  Transit-Woods Park Loop\nLeader: Michael Kazarinoff\nStart Location: Barbur Transit Center  at 9750 SW Barbur Blvd.\nStart Time: 9 am (arrive 10-15 min. early so we can start promptly at 9am)\nDistance: 3.3 miles\nElevation Gain: 287 ft.\nAverage Pace:  2 mph \nMeet at the south end the Barbur Transit Center between the SW Trail #5 signs  (there is ample parking art the Transit Center).    Please arrive by 8:45am to start at 9:00am. \nWe will start the hike on SW Trail #5 before transitioning to Ash Creek streets and through pathways. After hiking across Woods Creek to SE Multnomah Village via the Marigold Trail\, we will again be hiking on streets and through pathways\, before finishing up on SW Trail #7 and arriving back at Babur Transit Center.  We will pass by the fields at Smith School and hike through 2 corners of Woods Memorial Nature Area. \nThis hike is up and down with steps and dirt trails\, crossing both N. Ash Creek and Woods Creek (twice)\, as well as climbing the ridge between the Fanno and Tryon Creek’s watersheds.  Mud-worthy shoes as well as hiking sticks are recommended for those who usually need them.   Dress for the weather\, which is expected to be wet. \nBring water and snacks and dress appropriately for the weather.
