SUMMARY:2nd Saturday Hike January 11 2025
DESCRIPTION:Wells HS to the Willamette Walkway\nMeet at Ida B Wells HS by the Food Carts \nName: Hike to the Willamette Loop\nLeader: Dave Manville\nStart Location: Ida B Wells HS by the food carts\nStart Time:  9 am (arrive 10-15 minutes early so we can start promptly at 9am)\nDistance: 6.6 miles\nElevation Change:  1\,100 ft.\nPace:  2.5 mph avg \nBus Service: TriMet Stop ID-929 and 925 are very close by with some service on Saturday. \nHi Hikers\, here we go with another year of Hikes in 2025 with SWTrails.org. Come out\, get some exercise and join SWTrails on Saturday Dec 14th\, 9AM\, as Dave Manville leads us on a hike to the Willamette starting from Ida B Wells HS by the food carts. We will start heading down to the River via George Himes Park and then walk the Willamette River Trails/Walkway to the North ending on the 1/8 mile super duper demo section. We will return and head up to the Buhler Cutoff Trail in the Terwilliger Blvd Greenway. From there it’s back to the start. A nice hike but a bit long and with some elevation to help get the holiday excesses diminished. \nJoin us! and remember this is our longer and faster paced 2.5 mph average speed hike with usually more than 6-mile distance and some moderate elevation change. \nBring a snack\, water\, good footwear\, and dress appropriately for the weather (raingear? gloves? sunglasses? sunscreen? many layers?). Note that smoking on our hikes and walks is not permitted for health reasons. Kids are welcome and well-behaved pets on leash are welcome also. We always try and find restrooms along the way on these hikes\, but sometimes it is several miles to find one so prepare accordingly. \nWe look forward to hiking with you this Saturday.

The free Washington Park Shuttle is a good source of transport around the park.\nRestrooms: Restrooms can be found at the beginning of the hike at the Arboretum Visitor Center and at the Rose Garden in Washington Park. The restrooms at the Elephant House and the archery range may or may not be open.\nSpecial Notes:  Some steeper bits on this walk.  Bring walking sticks if you want. \nJoin us for a hike through Washington Park to see the winter landscape and maybe even a few hints of spring color! Our hike will begin by meeting at the Hoyt Arboretum visitor center. From the visitor center\, we will walk down the paved path past the giant big leaf maple tree around the water tank to find the Maple Trail. On the way to the Maple Trail is the sumac grove. \nFrom the Maple Trail\, we will walk down to join the Wildwood Trail\, then walk past the Washington Park archery range\, and on down to join the MAC Trail\, which will take us past the old Zoo Train tracks\, and eventually to the Elephant House\, with its historical plaque and whimsical animal designs. From there\, the MAC Trail takes us up to the Rose Garden\, and past the Washington Park Amphitheater\, the tennis courts\, and up some steps along the perimeter of the Japanese Garden. There are handrails along those steps up the hill\, and once we pass the Japanese Garden\,we will rejoin the Wildwood Trail and take it to the Winter Garden\, turning left back into the Arboretum\, up past the Magnolia Grove\, and back to the Visitor Center to finish our hike. \nDress in layers\, as winter weather in Portland can often be unpredictable. A light raincoat and waterproof hiking shoes are advisable. Comfortable walking shoes are a must. Also\, please bring a water bottle. There will be water fountains at the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center and at the Rose Garden. You will also want to bring a hat and gloves\, depending on the weather forecast that January weekend. Kids and well-behaved pets on leash are welcome\, but no smoking for the health and consideration of others. \nHope to see you there.\nEmily \nHave a favorite hike?  Let us know if you have one and would like to lead.
