SW Trails Request for Support for 2018

Dear Friends of SW Trails,

As we head into the holiday season with its gift giving, I hope you will keep in mind the joy and satisfaction you receive from participating in walks and work parties with SW Trails. You not only renew yourself, you also contribute to the larger community.

Your annual membership is the support behind those activities and we hope you will continue your generosity from the basic membership fee of $10 to whatever level you wish to contribute.

What has SW Trails accomplished this year in trail and advocacy work?

Lands Stewardship Work for Parks and Recreation in 2017

SW Trails has made tread improvements in Dickinson Park and also Maracara Park. On the 4T trail though Markham Park, we installed about 50 new steps and on the West side trail made drainage improvements. In Woods Park, we did turnpike construction and in Gabriel Park, we helped improve SW Trail 3 in the Nevada Ct. area. Finally, we had several fall sessions of sweeping off trails for winter use in Marshall and Dickinson Parks. Many other projects await approval from the City.

Advocacy

• Don Baack has been diligent in interaction with City officials to help obtain permission and funding for the continued growth of safe pedestrian and bicycle safety. These are a few of the issues with which he dealt this year:
• Organized and completed a joint effort to gravel muddy portions of the “goat path” along the east side of Capitol Hwy for nearly a mile from SW Garden Home Road to Taylor’s Ferry Road.
• He secured funding from the City Council for Safe Routes to School for children and adults going to Robert Gray, Hillsdale Dog Park, and the busses along Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway.
• He continued to push for completion of the Red Electric Bridge in Hillsdale and the Boones Ferry Bridge over Tryon Creek. Our Trail 6 will be possible, when this is completed and Oregon State Parks completes the trail from Marshall Park. Both are scheduled to be completed in 2019.
