Pedestrian and trail needs along the Barbur Corridor are a portion of the trail investment needs though out SW Portland. The more complete list of trail improvements needed is described here. This list created February 2014 mostly as improvements to numbered SW Trails. The list was updated April 29, 2014 with most of the updates (marked with Δ) being places that need sidewalks.
ΔFrom North to South starting south of downtown :
- Δ I 405 Bike/Ped Crossing Improvements: Improve opportunities for bicycles and pedestrians to cross over/under I405 on Harbor Drive, Naito Parkway, 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, & Broadway. ODOT – Portland project (#6022)
- Δ Bike Connection along south side of I 405 to connect Dunaway Park with Ho Chi Minh Trail Along 405 to 18th.
- Δ SW 1st bikeway SW Barbur to SW Arthur & connection to SW Kelly via SW Grover(#3038)
- Δ SW Naito reconfigured from SW Barbur to I 405. 2 lanes with bicycle lanes, sidewalks, left turn pockets, & on street parking. Remove grade separation, tunnel, connect to Ross Island bridge. ODOT – Portland project (#5013)
- Δ South Portland Circulation Redo of ramps to Ross Island Bridge. Appears to provide direct connection to Ross Island Bridge from Naito, make land available for re development. (#1044) ODOT – Portland project
- Δ SW Barbur from county line in Tigard to I 405
- Δ sidewalks where there are none, separated bicycle facility, with exception of parts of woods section where pedestrians could use the separate bicycle facilities. ODOT Facility (#1019, 3044, 4002, 5005, 5006)
- Δ may include new ped bicycle bridges beside Newbury (#6004) and
- Δ Vermont(#6005) bridges in Hillsdale. Depends if they shut down one lane for bicycles. Some of us do not support #3044 or #5006 until we understand the impact on our local streets of diverted traffic. ODOT – Portland projects
- Δ Pedestrian and bicycle improvements to Sam Jackson and Terwilliger from Dunaway Park to Marquam Shelter, will help OHSU bike riders and peds and bikes going to or from shelter on the 4T Trail.
4T Trail from OHSU
- extended shoulder with no parking north side of Marquam Hill Road from Gibbs to Fairmont, Δthis will also serve as a climbing bicycle lane. (also serves Trail 1).
Walking alternate when the tram is not working:
- Repair trail from Barbur to Terwilliger by
- replacing 10 steps,
- replacing walkway with 120 feet of concrete sidewalk,
- installling handrail on 200 feet of stairs, and
- installing lighting from Barbur to Terwilliger.
- New crossing of Naito at SW Whitaker with HAWK signal, new signage from east end of Hooley Bridge to Terwilliger Blvd.
These improvements from OHSU to the Hooley Bridge are also listed in the Trail 1 improvements.
Trail 1
- ΔRealign Trail 1 route to begin at Waterfront Trail at base of the Tram, use the Hooley Bridge to get Naito.

- Δ Red Electric is listed as #9005 and #9007. 9005 has the trail going down the hill under the Barbur Newbury and I5 Iowa bridges to get to Willamette Park. This will require a hillside full of retaining walls. I propose to redefine the alternative to make it much less expensive and combine it with #9007 and include #6004 a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge (included in the discussion of Barbur above, adjacent and parallel to the existing Newbury Bridge (just south of where Capitol Highway turns up the hill) to take the Red Electric to the Hooley Bridge.
